World Class Gymnastics in the News - 2007

NN GYMNAST SHINES AT NATIONALS

Only 12 years old, Kiera Brown of Newport News is being hailed as one of the top up-and-comers in local gymnastics.  It's easy to see why. In two years, she's skipped two levels of competition, 6 and 8, in moving up from Level 5 to Level 9 for World Class Gymnastics. And she's proved herself more than capable of the difficult challenges during that time, especially this season.  At the Virginia State Championships, she took the all-around, vault and beam titles for the 12-year-old age division.  At regionals, she placed second on vault and third in the all-around.  Then in the biggest meet of her young career, the Passage Middle School sixth-grader placed second on vault at the Level 9 Eastern Nationals in Orlando, Fla., May 11-13. She achieved the vaulting honor by posting a score of 9.575 among a field of 48 competitors in the Jr. A Division.

"For her first nationals, Kiera did great," said World Class head coach Tami Harrison.

On another of her strongest events, Brown tied for eighth on floor (9.45).  A fall on beam, resulting in a score of 8.225, ended her chances of a high finish in the all-around. She tied for 22nd in the AA (36.40).

"If she had stayed on the beam, she would have been fourth in the all-around," Harrison said.

At the state meet, Brown had won the beam title with a score of 9.4.  With the way her young star has performed throughout the year, Harrison said she plans to move her up again to another level.

"She's a real strong, powerful gymnast and will be a great Level 10 gymnast next year," Harrison said.
